Team Building Retreat

On 8th May 2011 which was a Sunday, Sunway University Student Council had organized a team building retreat camp. The purpose of the camp is to build confidence and to foster good relationship among the committee members of student council. A total of 14 people participated in this retreat camp, which includes the committee member of Sunway University Student Council and STACT members.

All members gathered at the foyer that morning at 11 a.m before departure. Everyone was smiling from ears to ears, brimming with excitement despite the morning mood and scorching weather. It was a good sign to kick start our adventurous day! Before the journey of retreat begins, a brief ice-breaking session was conducted. The ice-breaking session allows us to get to know each other better. Amazingly, every participant gets along so well and it only took us a few seconds to remember each other’s name!

Our expedition began at about 1.30pm. The Skytrex Adventure offers 3 different modules, the Little Adventure, the Big Thrill and the Extreme Challenge. Not being over ambitious, Big Thrill was chosen. The Big Thrill has 26 thrilling challenges with various level of difficulty raging from
“easy“ to “very difficult“. With some of the platforms reaching the height of 17 meters, a chilly feeling rushed down our spine while crossing the “Crazy Zig-Zag“ and flying on the “Sky-crawl“ at the Bermuda Triangle. In the process of completing the thrill activities, we held on to our breath while crossing “The Earthquake“, took the challenge to leap at “Happy Hopper“ and finally our courage had led us to the grand finale- the 100 meters “Wild Revenge“ that will take us to the finishing platform at an exhilarating speed.

As fantastic and impressive as it seemed, we had actually gone through Skytrex Initiation prior to the beginning of the journey. It is a compulsory to go through the initiation circuit before climbing “Little Adventure” or “Big Thrill”. This is to ensure the participant’s safety as accident may occur. The instructor taught us how to use the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), a safety system linked to the training station before we are allowed to proceed to the actual circuit.

The climb to the first station and the obstacle to the second station were the most daunting.

There were many obstacles that hindered us from reaching each station. It was indeed a daunting task to accomplish. However, once our fear was overcome, we learned to have faith in our senses and trust the safety equipments. At that miraculous moment, the rest of the obstacles failed to deter us. Determination, cooperation, faith and trust were the key that led us to success.  The instructors were strategically placed at alternate stations to ensure that we follow the necessary safety precaution. After plentiful of hard work, we completed our adventure with tears of joy. The journey hence ended at 3.30 p.m.

It was a blast! Everyone was exhausted but satisfied. It was a definitely a fruitful experience. Everyone had gained a rewarding experience and learnt a meaningful chapter in life. We managed to overcome our fears and got to know each other better.

Lesson of the day- ‘Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try' and 'Try and fail, but don't fail to try’. Skytrek, see you soon!
